January 18, 2021 — Save the Foundry

Published on January 21, 2021

Save the Foundry. Over the weekend, out neighbours in Corktown raised the alarm as demolition equipment quietly arrived at the Dominion Foundry Buildings. The Foundry Site is made up of 4 protected heritage buildings that have been on the City of Toronto's heritage roster since 2004. The Dominion Foundry originally supplied railway equipment to CN rail. Without any warning and without consulting the community, the provincial government has given the order to demolish the site. Local communities should have a say in how their neighbourhoods are built. The community vision for the site is inspiring. The community has been fighting to have the space developed for community use and affordable housing. Heritage and development are not mutually exclusive. Instead of working collaboratively with the community, we got bulldozers instead. I am calling on the Provincial Government to Immediately Halt Demolition and work with the community to preserve this valuable heritage site.

Take care and stay well,
