Last week, Premier Ford and Steve Clark, the Minister for Municipal Affairs and Housing, called Bill 184 for a vote at second reading.
Bill 184 is an omnibus housing bill. It will make it easier for landlords to evict tenants and allow for unlawful rent increases to become legal.
In the midst of a pandemic, when our Legislature should be focused on ensuring that folks in our community are safely housed, the government members limited debate and the amount of input Ontarians could offer on this critical piece of legislation.
I do not believe that it is right expedite legislation that weakens tenant rights when Ontarians are struggling to cope with a state of emergency in addition to painful news of anti-Black racism here at home and abroad.
I hope you will join me in calling on the Premier and Minister Clark to “vote no!” to Bill 184. I am including a script below that you can use in your phone-calls or emails to MPP Ford and MPP Clark.
Together, we can stand up for tenant rights!
Script for emailing or calling
My name is (your name) and I live in Toronto.
I am calling because I oppose the changes currently proposed in Bill 184.
Bill 184 is going to make it easier for landlords to evict tenants and for landlords to make illegal rent increases legal.
As a renter, I am already paying too much for housing. (Feel free to share other details of your story and why this issue matters so much to you).
Housing is a human right. That is why I want the Ontario Government to bring in real rent control and strengthen eviction protections, especially for those who can’t pay rent during this pandemic.
