Tomorrow marks the first day of Pride Month. To every member of the 2SLGBTQ+ community in Toronto Centre (and beyond!) — I want to wish you a happy Pride Month!
My heart is simultaneously heavy for 2SLGBTQ+ folks in our community who are distanced from friends and chosen family right now. My heart is even more heavy for 2SLGBTQ+ people who feel trapped in a home that is not a safe place for them. And I know this year will feel different as we navigate what Pride looks like when we can’t physically be together.
I’m scared for the very survival of the Church and Wellesley Village right now. And I know many of our neighbours are too.
I recently joined a group of community members, small business owners, and fellow MPPs for a virtual town hall to better understand how COVID-19 is affecting the Church and Wellesley Village, and what supports the 2SLGBTQ+ community needs from the provincial government right now.
What I heard re-affirmed why we need more supports for small businesses — especially Queer and Trans-owned businesses — that are struggling because of the loss of revenue that a physical Pride festival would have brought to our community.
This past week, I stood in the legislature, and called on the Premier directly to address these concerns.
I am calling for:
- commercial rent subsidies
- a ban on commercial evictions
- a real plan to support 2SLGBTQ+ businesses — and small businesses across Ontario — to survive this pandemic.
I hope you will join me in calling for the support the Church and Wellesley Village needs right now. You can sign the petition on my website here.
I look forward to seeing many of you at online events throughout the month! Pride will be different — but it will be as loud, proud, and resilient as ever.
🌈 You are already fabulous — and nothing can change that 🌈
