I am excited to support the rent subsidy proposal MPP Andrea Horwath is calling for. Fears about how to pay the rent were the number one concern constituents consistently share with me.
Bankruptcy, debt, mortgage woes and rent arrears are preventable.
As a kid who grew up in precarious housing while on the wait list for Toronto Community Housing I know how tough decisions can be when you run out of money and still have a lot days left in the month.
Ensuring all Ontarians have economic security will make our public health measures work better.
MPP Andrea Horwath's plan will:
- Subsidize 80% of the monthly rent, up to $2,500 per household, for up to four months. Every household that has experienced unemployment or lost income due to COVID-19 should be eligible. These funds should be dispersed directly to tenants as quickly as possible.
- Make these funds accessible to help small and medium-sized businesses with their leases.
- Give renters more protections through a legal ban on evictions, lockouts and disconnections — including business tenants — for four months, and a legal ban on threatening to evict or disconnect a tenant’s utilities.
- Ban any rent increases for six months.
We are simultaneously advocating for a federal ban on mortgage foreclosures for six months to give homeowners peace of mind as everyone gets back on their feet.
Renters need more protection and the province has not provided that. It's time to act now.
