Winter Newsletter Update

Published on December 25, 2018

Life at Queen’s Park has been fast and furious since being elected in June! We have had weeks of extra sittings (some going late into the evenings, and others into the wee hours of the morning!) Meanwhile, our new MPPs have been working tirelessly to hire staff and get their offices up and running. I am happy to say that I have quickly found my footing and have been honoured to be your voice in Ontario's Legislature. Speaking up for our communities is a job I take very seriously.

Last week the Legislature adjourned for the holidays and isn’t set to resume until February 19th, 2019. I am so excited to have these precious weeks in front of us to connect more deeply with my Toronto Centre community. Expect to see me out and about in our neighbourhood more than ever!

I'm also happy to share that while the Legislature was in session, I tabled my first Private Member’s Motion affirming affordable housing as a basic human right in Ontario.

My motion also called on the Ontario government to:

  • Address the shockingly long waitlist for rent-geared-to-income housing in Ontario (the current Toronto waitlist tops 15 years)
  • Fund at least one third of the capital repair backlog affecting social housing (which is leading to the closure of desperately needed units)
  • Fund the construction of new rent-geared-to-income housing in Ontario

On September 27th my motion passed with support across all party lines. Having affordable, adequate housing that feels like home is an issue that touches so many people in Toronto Centre. Strong communities thrive when they have stable housing and I am proud to be bringing the issue to the forefront at Queen’s Park.

It was wonderful to see so many community members come out to my Community Office opening on November 17th! Thank you to everyone who dropped by, met their neighbours, and had a slice of cake!

My staff and I are thrilled to have an office in the heart of the riding. We have already helped many constituents with issues they encounter interacting with their provincial government and we are looking forward to doing more of that good work in the future.

Wishing you and your families a safe and happy holiday season,

Member of Provincial Parliament, Toronto Centre
